The Assistant to the Director of Buildings & Operations is responsible for physically servicing and maintaining the College’s physical facility (‘Buildings’) and providing operational support to the College’s student body, faculty and (‘Operations’). The Assistant position must have the appropriate education, training and knowledge, coupled with proficient mechanical skill-set of related work experience, in order to confidently and comprehensively observe, evaluate, facilitate or execute work to ensure that the College’s physical facilities are fully operational in support of on-going academic activities. As required by the University’s Facilities Department, routine observational inspection and written summary reporting of the College’s three buildings, Crown Hall, 3410 S. State St. and Minerals & Metals Research Facility, and related building systems, is included in these responsibilities. As a means to achieving the primary overall responsibilities above the Assistant must be self-directed and be able to take the initiative in: 1) Directly engage any necessary University resources or personnel support as required to successfully complete any required work orders or assistance in the support of College activities. 2) Acquiring resources or outside contractor services for any special projects or internal activities that are to be executed by the College. 3) Identify and execute internal College projects that can be self-managed and self-executed at a professional level without outside services. 4) Anticipate weekly operational needs, provide assistance to students, faculty and staff and / or communicate the issues to the Director for follow-up and resolution. 5) Assist the Director of Buildings and Operations in establishing a list of long term (4-5 year) and short term (1-2 year) building maintenance requests and physical facility improvements. 6) Must attend staff meetings, organizational event meeting and University Building Monitor Meetings pertaining to the coordination and maintenance of the College facilities and / or University protocols for building services.

Education & Experience

Education & Experience a) A University Undergraduate degree or a Community College Associate degree is required. b) A minimum of three (3) years of cumulative experience in the building and/or construction management industry is required. c) A comprehensive computer program knowledge set and user experience is highly recommended. (See note above) Microsoft Office & Apple presentation software knowledge is required for both software and hardware troubleshooting. d) Familiarity with the structure and scope of the architecture profession is recommended.

Knowledge & Skills

a) Must have direct experience and full understanding of all shop tool operations as noted herein, and building maintenance materials and equipment (ie. experience working with and on a ladder and scaffold, proficient painting skills, familiarity with the proper use and handling of cleaners and chemicals, basic understanding, etc.). b) Familiarity with the review of building functions and equipment needs ? ability to monitor the use and condition of equipment and facilities (and self educate if needed) regarding the proper operation and adjustment of all basic equipment. c) Must be available for training regarding the use, care and operation of special equipment procured for the regular departmental academic activities.
