GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Director of Buildings & Operations oversees physical, operational and programmatic support for administrative, academic and special programs in the College of Architecture’s three primary buildings: S.R. Crown Hall, 3410 S. State Street and The Mineral & Metals Building. In addition to building maintenance and operations oversight, the Director manages the space planning and utilization for core academic programs, and coordinates special programs and events for the College, University, and broader design community. In doing so, a key objective of the Director position is to facilitate the stewardship and care of buildings, spaces, and equipment, fulfilling the vision and mission of the Dean of the College, in conjunction with University strategic planning.

Building Stewardship
a) As educator, directs academic and administrative facilities planning, setup and use of existing academic and administrative equipment and the procurement of new within Crown Hall, 3410 and M&M to service the needs of students, faculty and staff. Manages development of the College Handbook that provides guidelines and protocols for the stewardship of buildings and equipment provided to students, faculty, and staff as well as visitors to the College. Coordinates with University supplied services and facilities to support the College infrastructure.

b) As building monitor, disseminates university-wide initiatives related to facilities planning and maintenance affecting all IIT buildings and reports campus issues affecting performance of CoA buildings and surroundings. Ensures the safety and function of building operations to maintain the health and welfare of the facilities, students, faculty and staff of the College.

c) As licensed architect, coordinates with historic preservation efforts and the University planning for stewardship, maintenance and improvements of Crown Hall and related facilities. Participates on the Architectural Design Review and Recommendation Committee on behalf of the Dean, to provide professional review of IIT proposed building and campus projects to support the program.

Building Development & Improvements
a) Designs and executes Dean’s space planning directives related to academic, curricular, and faculty needs. In collaboration with University Facilities and Design & Construction Department assists in coordinating University Design and Construction-led capital improvements to Crown Hall, 3410, and Materials & Metals; including on-site coordination of maintenance and service work orders through Facilities Department as well as university provided sub-contractor services.
a) Coordinates general repair and maintenance requests through the Facilities Department work order system as needed for daily service and monitors, reviews and makes recommendations regarding critical building and equipment performance and operations for long-term building maintenance needs and equipment replacement.

b) Provide after-hours / on-call facilities support for emergency conditions and coordinates with Public Safety, Network Services and contracted maintenance services in order to maintain a safe, secure and clean building facilities conditions

Special Schedule Requirements

In addition to performing duties during regular departmental business hours of 9am-5pm the Director position also requires flexible work scheduling to support special event setups and academic time constraints as well as emergencies.

Provide after-hours / on-call facilities support for emergency conditions and coordinates with Public Safety, Network Services and contracted maintenance services in order to maintain a safe, secure and clean building facilities conditions.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

The position requires a graduate degree in either architectural design or a related design field; at least 5 years of professional (architectural, architectural engineering or architectural construction administration) experience is required in the educational and institutional industry.

Knowledge & Skills

Fluency in the use of:
Word processing, documentation and presentation software (Word, Excel & PowerPoint and Pages, Numbers and Keynote, etc.)

Graphic presentation and visualization software (Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, Illustrator)

CAD drawing programs – (AutoCAD or similar)

Key Responsibility

a) Coordinates with the CoA Operations Assistant and IT Coordinator to ensure proper room maintenance, appropriate equipment setups and the scheduling of academic activities in EMS; setups to be provided for A/V needs, special exhibition and multi-media needs of special events and coursework presentations. Coordinate with OTS or other University support services for external events and University wide activities in the College.

b) Coordinates with the Director of Finance regarding University contracted building services and maintenance as provided through the University’s work order system as well as the review service related expense and current and / or proposed improvement budgets.

c) Coordinates with the CoA Materials Lab Supervisor to review proposed expenditures for materials and equipment, as well as coordination of special installations, academic exhibitions and College-wide safety protocols and studio work policies. Communicates long term planning and development of the shop facility technology and operational capacity.

Support and install special exhibition installations for unique programs, e.g. NAAB & LAAB Accreditation presentations; GRC exhibition materials, student work exhibitions, and coordination of Design-Build and large scale site projects. Design, strategizing and physical production of displays, exhibitions and archiving of CoA student and exhibition materials, Publications activities, Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP) and The Mies Society events and presentations

Key Responsibility

a) As a member of all College events planning committees, to provide coordination, planning and curation of semester based and annual events including the open house student work exhibition, the College’s commencement, the Publications Department lecture series events of renown national and international architectural speakers, including set-up of space needs and a/v, take-down; to assist in the building setup and coordination of extracurricular academic activities and special events within College facilities including University Career Fair, AIAS Student Chapter Conference, NOMA Pipeline camp and the CoA Summer Experiment in Architecture Programs.

b) As a liaison of the College and a member of the design community, to assist in the building setup and coordination of extracurricular activities and special events that utilize the historic and unique College facilities, including coordination with University Event Services to oversee external suppliers and vendors for the regular hosting of the University Board of Trustees Dinner and the University Board of Overseers Dinners; to provide a full range of support for design community events such as the annual MCHAP exhibition and symposium, the CTBUH Annual Benefit, SCA design community fundraiser and dinner, AIAS symposia, performing arts events and CoA alumni events.
